Joe Hood

Founder

Joe Hood founded Hood's Automotive in 1972.  As a toddler, Joe would take things apart and put them back together.  By the time he was 14 years old, he could disassemble and reassemble a carburetor blind folded.  He was highly sought out as an auto mechanic by several colleges where we would be a guest speaker and teach students about auto repair.  In 1962, he went into the Army and upon his return, went to work at Godats as the Shop Foreman.  On February 1, 1972, Joe decided to start his own business and founded Hood's Automotive.

Joe came from a family of auto mechanics, including his father and all four of his brothers.  In 1979, they were featured in the St. Louis Post Dispatch as a leading family company.

Joe started his company in a Zephyr gas station with a two bay shop.  In 1974, he expanded to the Lucas Carriage Factory at St. Charles Rock Road and Fee Fee Road (across from Branneky Hardware).  He closed the gas station in 1976 and went full-time working on cars.  In 1979, the Lucas Carriage Factory burned down.  Joe relocated to a Texaco Station at Hwy 70 and St. Charles Rock Road where the business continued to thrive.  He eventually built another five bay shop next to the Texaco and exited the gas business again to focus 100% on auto repair.  In 1974, he sold the bulding and moved "down the hill" to 11737 St. Charles Rock Road (previously occupied by Coffelt Paving) where he grew the business over the next 25 years. In 2007, he and his daughter, Michelle, joined together to build the current location at 198 NW Industrial Ct. in Bridgeton.

Joe was married to his wife, Nancy, for 53 years and had four children, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Joe died November 1, 2017 leaving his legacy of honesty and integrity in business to his children and grandchildren.

There are a lot of things to consider when it comes to caring for your car or truck: cost, reputation, dependability. At Hood’s Automotive, we believe one thing stands out among all else – honesty. That’s why we guarantee we will not sell anything that is not necessary to maintain the safety of your vehicle and keep it on the road. That’s been our motto since 1972 and it’s why people keep coming back to us for all their automotive needs.

We proudly serve customers in St. Louis and surrounding communities.
